Gotham Episode Review: ‘Welcome Back Jim Gordon’
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Gotham episode ‘Welcome Back Jim Gordon’
Fish looks downright happy to be locked up in some bizarre medical torture room, so my assessment of her is evolving, I hadn’t realized that she was ca-razy, just that she was wicked, confident, and quite frankly cool.
So, kissing Dr. Leslie Thompkins is ‘strictly business’? I wonder what the two of them would have to get up to for it to count as personal.
As someone with an associates in Criminal Justice, I really find the phrase ‘public service homicide’ deplorable, but I’m afraid there are those in law enforcement who would think that the murder of a drug dealer was indeed a public service, and it makes me sad. Thankfully Gordon represents those in law enforcement who believe that every murder deserves the same time and attention, that every person deserves that justice.

Pocketing evidence doesn’t really seem like Jim’s style, I hope the writers have a good reason for it.
Aaand there goes the only witness, no wonder people don’t really want to help the police in a city like Gotham. You admit to seeing something and you should be safe in the precinct, but in Gotham no where is safe, not even Wayne Manor.
Fish is one of those people that enjoys getting under their torturer’s skin, it’s kind of fascinating to watch.
Aww little Bruce looking for Selina, so young and already infatuated with each other. And Ivy Pepper is still as creepy as ever, I wonder if she had had a friend like Harley Quinn back then would she have turned out differently? Still a criminal but less inclined towards terrorism and attempted genocide for her precious babies.
I have to wonder what inspires so much loyalty in Butch, he’s willing to risk everything, and kill childhood friends for Fish. Maybe at some point the writers will reveal what she did to instill that loyalty.
Why does Gordon think that typical interrogation tactics will work on his fellow cop? It doesn’t make any sense, they are trained in the same techniques he is, he needs to think outside the box to get them to talk to him, especially if it means ratting out one of their own. Which is of course where Bullock comes in, he knows his fellow cops a lot better than Gordon does right now and he knows how to get what he wants from them.
Jim is never going to make many friends in the GCPD, it’s really a wonder he lives long enough to become the Police Commissioner. Everyone knows that is not how you treat a dirty cop, even if he’s a murderer, you have to play by the rules.
There is a serious bond here between Fish and Butch, I really want to know more about it.
I have to wonder if Penguin’s mother doesn’t have some mental problems, to be sure her relationship with her son definitely warrants therapy for them both.
Of course the Narcotics division is dirty it’s Gotham, there are like five good cops in the whole city, Essen, Montoya, her partner Allen, Bullock, and Gordon, and even then Essen and Bullock aren’t exactly clean.
Poor Bullock just gets dragged into all of Gordon’s messes, and he never really learns, maybe he’s just resigned to it at this point. Ugh really? dude is stabbed in the back with an ice pick while in the police precinct? Ruling that death a suicide was so so stupid, no one will fall for that.
Edward Nygma and his crush on Kristen Kringle is very cute, sadly she will play a major role in turning him into the Riddler, though I also now suspect that his first criminal act will likely be to get his revenge on the cops who torment him about his feelings for her. The poem is very sweet and the truth is that Kringle would be lucky to have Nygma, too bad that for him to be the Riddler they can never happen.
Penguin’s got some loyal cronies of his own these days, also I think Mrs. Cobblepot might be drunk at this point, although my husband has pointed out that she isn’t really acting any different than usual. Now her son is another matter, very very drunk, might even be the first time he’s gotten drunk too. Well maybe it’ll deaden the pain Fish is about to bring down on him.
What a picture, Bruce playing against himself in chess, and Selina slinking in through a window, I can almost see them doing this years later as Batman and Catwoman, except maybe he’s setting up the game for the two of them, and maybe it’s on a Gotham roof top on a quiet night.
Snowglobes are actually quite surprisingly romantic, all that nonsense about Selina wanting Bruce to stop hassling her is just because she’s very defensive about being a street kid, she is clearly captivated by him or she wouldn’t keep coming around.
Still really weird to see Victor Zasz with a gun and a crew, though he does already make he trade mark tallies on his body for his kills.
Poor Bruce, to be heartbroken so young, of course Alfred may regret teaching Bruce to toughen up, as that is how he will deal with every emotional situation in the future as he becomes the Bat.
Yup, Gordon was right, Bullock has a thing for Fish, I wonder if she has the same kind of relationship as Butch, she is rather gorgeous.
Jim is really going to regret asking for that favor from Pengiun, he never would have allowed anyone to threaten Delaware’s family just to get the info on Flask, and now technically he’s a dirty cop too.
