Joss Whedon Almost Made a Female Batman Movie?
By Skip Harvey
Do you remember when DC hit a home run when they hired Joss Whedon to write and direct a Wonder Woman movie? No? That’s probably because they blew it and let him walk over creative differences. Then he made Avengers. DC is still trying to play catch-up.
Strangely, he wanted to do something crazier.
BuzzFeed recently followed up on an older interview with Whedon where he talked about his view on women in Hollywood and the lack of strong female leads. He’s walking away from making Marvel films due to the exhaustive process and he almost considered not returning for Age of Ultron. What would he have done instead?
"I will say that when I was thinking about, Well, if I wasn’t going to do Avengers 2, what would I want to do? — of course the first thing I thought of was ‘turn-of-the-century female Batman.’ Not Batman actually. But, you know, something cool. One person. Can’t stress that enough. Movie about one person — not a team, not 10, just one. But [I would] do a nice sort of hard action movie that combined all my favorite things. Something that would be the love child of Sam Fuller and Edward Gorey. You know, I’ve had many thoughts since then. Oh, I could do this! Oh, I could do that! But it is my instinct to want to tell those stories."
So, it wouldn’t have literally been Batman, but I would be willing to bet DC would have thrown a bazillion dollars at him to do something like Batwoman or Batgirl. I, for one, would have died to see that happen.
