First Supergirl Villain Will Be Lumberjack
By Steve Lam
Find actress to play Kara Danvers / Kara Zor-El / Supergirl. Check. Find actor to play love interest Jimmy Olsen. Check. Who else is left? Oh right, the villain. Via TVLine, the first villain to appear on CBS’s upcoming Supergirl series will be Lumberjack. Who? Exactly. Even the wiki page dedicated to DC Comics barely has an entry for him.
Created by Gerry Conway and Jose Delbo, Lumberjack made his first and only appearance in Wonder Woman #268 (June 1980). The only thing known so far is that CBS is looking for someone who’s built like Rory McCann — the 6-foot-6 actor who plays the Hound in HBO’s Game of Thrones. The casting call for the role gives us a tiny bit more:
"… big, burly monster of a man, who has battled Kara’s cousin."
Yep, basically a big dude who has fought Superman! It’s unknown if the Man of Steel will be making any type of cameo, or if they’ll just reference him by name. Obviously Lumberjack isn’t too smart, because if he’s fought Superman, he should know that a cousin is a relative who has genetic similarities to a person. So he shouldn’t get his hopes up at besting Kara.
CBS’s new Supergirl series is from executive producer Greg Berlanti — the man behind The CW’s Arrow and The Flash. The premise for the show will center around Kara Zor-El embracing her newly discovered powers:
"The hourlong drama, which received a hefty series commitment, centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Benoist will play Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers (which she shares with her famous cousin, Superman). Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She’s still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn’t know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she’s even given a new moniker: Supergirl."
There is no set date for the premiere of Supergirl.
