Are We Getting an Actual Joker Origin Story??
By Skip Harvey
Believe it or not, there is no official origin for The Joker. Really. There is no Jack Napier, no ‘why so serious stories’. DC has intentionally kept the Joker’s background unknown to make him more enigmatic. The only person who’s ever been allowed to tell that story is the great Alan Moore, in The Killing Joke…until now.
Word has come down that Batman scribe Scott Snyder has begun plotting out the official origin for The Clown Prince of Crime. Here’s what he’s been dropping across various interviews.
From his NerdSpan interview:
"“The consequences of this one change everything. In “Death of a Family,” he gave Batman a chance. In this one, there are no chances. This one is about tearing everything down, for The Joker. And a lot of it does get torn down, and what comes out on the other side and what it leads to, the transformative aspects to the story, is very, very big.”"
Here’s what he dropped on CBR:
"The Joker never says he’s crazy. He more, unapologetically, says, “This is who I am.” He very much has reasons for doing the things that he does, which make sense in his relationship with Batman. But I don’t think he views himself as crazy, and I don’t think Batman thinks he’s crazy either. The public perception of him is that he is a lunatic, but deep down, he’s actually very evil."
From IGN :
"[W]e saw a brand new origin for the Joker that explained how he has a regenerative quality — linked to Vandal Savage, Ra’s al Ghul, and the Talons — that not only grants him unnaturally long life, but the ability to heal from fatal injuries. Last issue, Jim Gordon discovered pictures of the Joker dating back to the beginnings of Gotham, and this issue appeared to confirm that the Joker is older than Gotham….[T]his is where he says, “Guess what? I’ve always been immortal, and now I’m closing the door on you, little mortal Bruce Wayne.”"
