Rumor: John Diggle From Arrow May Become Green Lantern

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, actor David Ramsey said that Arrow executives are in discussions to reveal John Diggle as John Stewart — Green Lantern. This follows a long speculated belief that the character of John Diggle has not been using his full name and is in actuality John Stewart Diggle.

During the interview, the site asked if Ramsey wanted to be Green Lantern. That’s when the actor spilled the beans:

"Now, John Stewart… Is John Diggle John Stewart? I cannot say “yes,” and cannot say, “no.” … I’m serious! I do know that there is serious discussion about whether or not this guy becomes John Stewart. But, I mean, I’ll say this: it is top secret. David Ramsey has asked them, and they’re like, “we’re working on some stuff.” If that’s the case, it’s gonna be huge. This is the stuff they want to avoid. I think they don’t want anybody to know yet and they haven’t even told me. They have told me that they are thinking about it and they are considering it. Greg Berlanti told me that. Andrew and Marc have told me that. I haven’t spoken to Geoff Johns about it, yet. But that’s the word from people directly involved in Arrow- that they’re working on something. Here’s the truth of it: if I knew, I would tell you I knew and I’m not at liberty to tell you that. I probably wouldn’t tell you anyway! I would at least tell you that I know. But I honestly do not know."

Ever since John Diggle was introduced in the series, fans have made comparisons of the character to John Stewart in the comics: both have physical similarities, and both have extensive military training and are veterans. On top of those likenesses, both characters have been known to challenge authority for the greater good.

Re-introducing John Diggle as John Stewart / Green Lantern would not be that far-fetched, especially with the recently expanded universe showing characters with more fantastic abilities — The Flash. Add to that, Arrow itself has also introduced Ray Palmer / The Atom. Though still keeping him somewhat grounded, they’re still going to give him a suit that can do some amazing things.

Perhaps it’s time for Diggle to really break out on his own. He’s already helped Ollie fight corruption and crime in Starling City. And in Ollie’s initial absence during January’s mid-season premiere, Diggle also acted as a team leader.
