Sony Co-Chairman Amy Pascal resigns following hacking scandal

The Sony hacks really didn’t take any prisoners with several members of high-profile staff and several actors and actresses coming across rather badly as leaked email communications between them were leaked to the public. Perhaps the person who came across the worst in the whole thing was Sony Co-Chairman Amy Pascal.

As a result it’s definitely no surprise that she has chosen to step-down from her high-profile position at the top of Sony Pictures. Despite apologising for some of the details that emerged from leaked emails sent to her, and from her. However her ‘voluntary’ stepping down isn’t the end of Pascal’s involvement with Sony.

That’s because Amy Pascal is setting up her own production company that will launch in May 2015, with Sony agreeing to bankroll the company for, at least, the next four years as well as having distribution rights as a part of Pascal’s agreement to step down as Co-Chairman. This is a move that she states has been discussed “for some time.” She goes on to add “I have spent almost my entire professional life at Sony Pictures and I am energized to be starting this new chapter based at the company I call home.”

As much as I’d like to believe that Amy Pascal was always going to step-down as Co-Chairman and run her own production company, even before the Sony hacking scandal happened, but I just don’t believe that to be true. This strikes me as a carefully planned piece of damage control with Amy Pascal’s head rolling.

The big questions now are, who will replace Amy as Co-Chairman? Or will Michael Lynton be left to man the ship on his own? And what will happen with Sony’s slate of films like James Bond or Amazing Spider-Man?
