Scribd Adds Comics By Marvel, Other Top Publishers To Subscription Service

Ever wonder why there wasn’t the equivalent of an all-you-can-read digital service for comics that wasn’t limited to a specific company? I certainly have, especially since subscription streaming services are so popular for movies, TV and music. I’ve often wondered if digital comics would benefit from having a Spotify or Netflix of their own.

As it turns out, people have been working on just such a solution, and it’s here as of today. The eBook and audiobook subscription service Scribd announced this morning that it has added comic books from Marvel and several other publishers to its offerings. Along with the over 1 million regular books already on the service, subscribers will have access to over 10,000 comics and graphic novels from Marvel, Valiant, IDW, Top Shelf, Archie, Boom! Studios, Top Cow, Arcana, Zenescope and more, all for $8.99  month.

“We are very excited to take this step in expanding our subscription service beyond books,” Trip Adler, co-founder and CEO of Scribd, said in a press release. “This addition gives comics readers the freedom of unlimited reading, while also giving our ebook and audiobook lovers the opportunity to discover comics and graphic novels.”

Readers will be able to browse the comics on Scribd in a number of ways, including by character, by series and via collections specifically curated by Scribd editors.

Marvel also made its own announcement regarding the partnership with Scribd, highlighting the fact that this is the first time Marvel Comics will be available through a subscription service that also features other kinds of books. The company’s contributions will be small compared to the library on its own Marvel Unlimited service, but will still feature top characters like the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man, classic runs of multiple series and the work of top creators.

“For decades, a driving force at Marvel has been the desire to put comics in the hands of new readers,” Daniele Campbell, VP CRM, said in a statement. “Our partnership with Scribd allows some of Marvel’s greatest stories to sit alongside Scribd’s already vast and eclectic catalogue of content in an effort to reach readers who might not have access to a comic shop.”

Scribd is also offering a free one-month trial for people interested in checking out the service. For more info, head to scribd.com, where you’ll see the arrival of comics heavily promoted and no doubt break into a bit of a smile right away.
