The Rock to Fight Batman and Superman?
By Skip Harvey
OK, take this for what it is. It COULD be a peak into the internal discussions about DC’s shared Cinematic Universe. It could also just be something Geoff Johns told Dwayne Johnson as a blow off answer to his questions.
As you may or may not know, Johnson (aka The Rock) is set to play the Captain Marvel villain Black Adam in the big screen SHAZAM! movie in 2019. In a recent interview with Total Film, he talked about how Adam might fit into the rest of the DCU.
"I think Black Adam is going to grow into becoming an anti-hero. It’s all written within the spirit of respecting and paying homage to the comics. As we know, Black Adam started out as a slave. When he’s given the powers, he utilized them. Then in the wake of his powers, tragedy strikes, which turns his sentiment and tone in terms of psychology. It was all agreed that the worlds are all interconnected… One day you will see Black Adam go at it with Superman or Batman or any of the DC characters. But that said, there’s a great independence to Black Adam from the DC world, allowing us to inject, not only viciousness, but also winking humor."
I suppose you could take this either way. It’s clear that Johnson has had some serious discussions about the role and the vision behind it, but it is still unclear if DC’s plans will see all these movies come to light, let alone all fit together. They had big hopes for Green Lantern, after all.
