Spider-Gwen cameos in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
By Daniel Wood
You’d be forgiven for thinking that all of Marvel’s solo female comics were based on Spider-Man characters with Spider-Woman, Spider-Gwen and Silk all getting a lot of press as their independant comics prepare to break.
However there’s on female comic book character enjoying a solo comic run that has very little to do with Spider-Man; The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Squirrel Girl is light, whimsical character designed to bring back the fun of comic books and she’s also as the title suggests ‘Unbeatable’

She’s squared off against the likes of Doctor Doom, Deadpool, MODOK, Wolverine and Thanos and has scored victories against them all, leading to people suggesting that she’s the most powerful superhero of all time! (As somewhat of a joke)
But the most interesting thing for me about Squirrel Girl is that in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #2 one of the newest, yet most eagerly anticipated Spider-Man characters makes a cameo. See if you can spot the character in question in the following panel (and pretend you didn’t read the title of this article!)
That’s right folks it’s Gwen Stacy and her band the Mary Janes! Now obviously in terms of narrative and continuity this cameo is problematic but it’s quite obviously just a fun little nod to Marvel’s newest breakout character and isn’t trying to suggest that Squirrel Girl is set in Spider-Gwen’s universe.
I regret not picking this comic up now, it looks like a lot of fun!
