Is There Any Chance The Walking Dead Spinoff Won’t Be Ordered To Series?

It sounds like a pretty silly question, I admit. The Walking Dead is the hottest show on television, seemingly at the height of its powers as it shambles through its fifth season. Its spinoff show, currently going by the code name “Cobalt,” just seems like a no-brainer for AMC. Even if it only attracts, say, 70 percent of the audience for The Walking Dead, that seems like a huge win.

It’s been taken for granted that AMC has that same view, but could we all be assuming too much? Maybe, if one quote from a lengthy interview that executive producer Gale Anne Hurd just gave to The Hollywood Reporter means anything. Hurd revealed that the Cobalt pilot is indeed finished, but when asked when it might air, she had a very good reason for saying she had no idea.

"No because we haven’t been picked up to series yet."

So is there any way that the cable channel won’t ask for a spinoff for its most popular show? I think there’s at least a non-zero chance that might be the case, if only because AMC might have concerns about its creative direction. While The Walking Dead certainly hasn’t followed the exact road map that Robert Kirkman has laid out in the comics, the TV series is at least working with the same broad strokes in terms of characters and locations. The spinoff will be set somewhere else and feature all new survivors, and it’s not impossible to think that AMC just won’t like what it sees.

I’d still guess that the chance that Cobalt ends up getting shelved is very small. This is really the perfect time to launch it, when TWD mania is still at its peak, and if it’s successful, maybe it can be something that even runs past the time when the original series closes up shop. There are 15 million reasons for the spinoff to find its way onto the AMC schedule, and those will probably win out.
