Amazing Spider-Man #14 Recap

After 13 issues of what is perhaps the best event Marvel has had in the past few years, we’ve come to the conclusion of the Spider-Verse! Let’s take a look at the Amazing Spider-Man #14, and recap the Spider-Verse Part 6: Web-Warriors.

We open to the streets of Loomworld, where it looks like Spider-Woman and Silk are going to be overrun by a Green Goblin army (and knowing what happened to Gwen on Earth-616, Jessica can’t help but be worried).

Peter and company appear in a purple flash, jumping into action. At first Pete is understandably concerned about Gwen’s well-being, though in the end he trusts her to hold her own and she takes out the last Goblin. We learn that Verna took Silk in the midst of their battle, meaning the Inheritors have all three of the special totems.

Back in the halls of the Inheritors, as Morlun prepares for the ritual, Solus seems distraught at the death of their father; those apprehensions are put to rest as Jennix presents a red crytal, which contains the essence of Lord Solus -but lacks a vessel to inhabit.

With the three special totems: Kaine, Benjy, and Silk, tethered to a chained Master Weaver by a grand web, Morlun begins the ritual. He cuts into Kaine, and with his blood wetting the web, it is said that the great totem will no longer inhabit a living thing, and shall find no new host. The Master Weaver warns that the Spiders are coming for them, and Morlun calls his brothers and sisters (save for Daemos) to hold them off at the gates while he completes the ritual.

We then see a two page spread of the Inheritors leaping out to fight the Spider Totems. Peter addresses the odds look bad, four Inheritors versus their assembled squad, but calls in the cavalry in the form of Miles and the Web-Warriors. With the Inheritors subdued by battle, Spider-Man and the Superior Spider-Man head toward Morlun.

Inside the Great Hall, Morlun makes the second cut by slicing Silk’s hand, and it is determined that no new Spider-Totem will appear by chance (as in the numerous causes of the Spider-(Wo)Men). Finally, he approaches Benjy, whose blood on the skeins of the great web will decree that no new Spider-Totems will ever be born, and that no new age will ever begin. Moments before the blade falls, a web appears and whips away the knife, as Peter and company arrive and being the final showdown.

Pete taunts Morlun and engages him, noting how Morlun has been ducking him the whole time, while the Superior Spider-Man unsuccessfully attacks Daemos, only to have his extra limbs shattered. Fortunately for him, May Parker follows up with a kick of her own. Peter calls for backup, but Uncle Ben seems to find a portal leading away from the battlefield more interesting, and teleports away.

We switch gears and come back to the battle raging outside between the other four Inheritor siblings and the Web-Warriors. A flash interrupts the battle as Karn, the exiled Inheritor, steps into the arena. At first, Brix and Bora reason that with Solus dead their brother’s exile has come to an end, and he is there to assist them; not so however, as he renounces his inheritance, and announces that he fights on the side of the righteous -for the Spiders! And you have to admit, that is a pretty epic (not a word used lightly) shot of them standing together.

The issue transitions to Morlun knocking aside Peter, and asking aloud what went wrong in his grand scheme. He goes to bleed Benjy and finish the ritual only to find that Uncle Ben pulled the ol’ switcheroo and Spider-Ham has been masquerading as the scion while Morlun was fighting Peter. With everything going according to Spider-Man’s plans, he calls in the big guns for the final push.

Outside, we see Jennix smash Sp//dr to the ground, poised to win… that is until Leopardon enters in a flash with Spider-Man 2099 and Lady Spider hitching a ride. We check back in with May Parker Spider-Girl and Daemos, where May has managed to steal the crystal that holds Solus from her brother’s kidnapper. Upon learning of its contents, she cracks it slightly, threatening Daemos.

As they tussle with their foes, the Superior Spider-Man does what he always does and finds a solution that the others were too blind to see, or simply didn’t agree with. He unleashes his claws and slays the Master Weaver, so as to put an end to the ritual’s catalyst. Spider-Man tries to remind Otto that they do not kill, that they are heroes and killing is something they don’t do; this in turn resonates with May, who keeps the crystal intact, proclaiming she seeks justice, not vengeance.

Enraged at the fall of his destiny, Morlun mounts Peter and begins sucking his life force, batting aside all those who try to save him. Gwen holds the others back, telling them to trust in Peter; as he sucks the essence out of Pete, Morlun demands that Peter begs, that he says his final words -to which Spider-Man responds, “go to hell,” while activating his teleporter.

The two of them arrive on Earth-3145, where the radiation threatens to kill them both. Morlun, a fearful look on his face, starts to say that Peter said he’d never kill, but Pete points him towards the safe tower, and is promptly rescued by a web lifeline courtesy of Silk (who says that she always knows where he is due to their connection).

We then see Karn and the Spiders tossing the remaining webbed up Inheritors through the portal to Earth-3145. Daemos is both remorseful and confused at their reaction to his actions, but leaps into the portal when May throws Solus’s crystal through.

With the Inheritors taken care of, the Spiders take a moment to rest. Miguel 2099 points out that they can all go home to their proper times (with a musing Superior Spider-Man behind him), but Spider-Man himself is content to take a little R&R after their long day, locking hands with Silk as she sits on his lap, cradling his life-essence drained body.

And thus… the Spider-Verse concludes.
