All-New X-Men #35 Recap

The last issue ended with Jean Grey strapped into Cerebro trying to find her team. So naturally All-New X-Men #35 starts with one hell of a brawl taking place at Castle Doom, Latveria. There’s a two page spread showing the clearly reunited All-New X-Men an their Ultimate universe counterparts battling Doombots with both of the Icemen discussing the day turning out unexpectedly.

We’re then treated to smaller interactions within the battle. We see Rogue save Spider-Man from a Doombot and as he thanks her, calling her ‘Rock’, he discovers he’s been saying her name wrong the whole time. Then we see Angel complimenting something that Iceman does only to discover it was the Ultimate Iceman that did it, also Beast reacts to Ultimate Jean getting hurt but she tells him to get Doom. Spider-Man and X-23 find themselves together and Spider-Man tells her to cover his back as he’s going to try something. 616 Jean rescues Ultimate Jean as they observe Miles doing something obviously heroic. However Doctor Doom appears to be one step

ahead and shoots something at Miles as Jean watches on in horror.

We then jump back in time to the moment that we left off in #34 with Jean Grey strapped into Cerebro looking at all of the lights in front of her. They surmise that the lights are the rest of her team, meaning that they’re all there as well. Suddenly there’s a big light in the middle of Cerebro that looks just like the energy signature of the little girl that sent them there. Jean gets excited about finding her team and her potential way back to her own world and Ultimate Jean offers the help of her X-Men.

We catch up with Dr. Doom and Beast, as the villain explains why he needs Beast’s help. Dr. Doom wants Beast to prove the multiverse so that he can meet his other selves. Beast says he can’t do it but Doom tells him to help him turn a broken time cube into a dimensional portal. We also catch up with Ultimate Wolverine, X-23 and Angel. X-23 is freaking out and angry about what she’s just learnt taking it out on a tree as the two Jean Grey’s arrive.

What then follows is a hilarious series of introductions as both sets of X-Men introduce themselves to each-other. We learn that Ultimate Angel is dead from Ultimate Rogue’s surprised reaction to seeing Angel, Ultimate Storm is deliberately flying the plane so that she doesn’t have to see him. There’s also a brilliant awkward conversation between Angel and Ultimate Kitty Pryde that’s mercifully interrupted by Ultimate Iceman who has found himself on Google alerts.

We see Iceman still trying to evade the police following his escape. He eventually has to stop because he runs out of ice, landing amongst a group of people who treat him like a celebrity. The cops surround Iceman as he desperately tries to get some water or something from the crowd. Suddenly it starts snowing and Iceman transforms into his ice-mode just in time to stop police bullets. Ultimate Storm reveals herself as the one behind the snow and tells Bobby that they need to rescue one more mutant, hoping that it’ll be as easy as this was.

We cut back to Hank who is upside down and working on a huge board of science equations. Dr. Doom congratulates him before he’s informed that Latverian airspace has been infiltrated. Doom asks Beast who the X-Men found him and Beast tells him about Cerebro, much to Doom’s interest. Doom orders that the ship is shot down, and then orders a squadron of Doombots to kill any survivors for good measure.

The two Icemen are talking on the plane, with Ultimate Iceman lamenting the fact he can never go back to Atlanta. Jean Grey quips that she’s relieved Bobby finds himself as annoying as she finds him. The alert goes off letting them know the plane’s been spotted and Jean communicates with Hank telepathically. Jean overpowers Doom’s mind control allowing Beast to attack Doom as the X-Men vacate the plane and prepare for battle. We then see the final moments of the opening battle where Miles jumps and seemingly gets blasted by Doom as Jean watches on in horror. Ending the issue in a cliffhanger.
