Marvel Needs to go Ultimate with Spider Man
By Dante Nelson
By now you’ve probably heard about Spider-Man making a return, or really, a debut with Marvel for the big screen. From there, we heard all sorts of reports. What was happening with Andrew Garfield? What about the Sony movies on the horizon? When would Spider-Man make his debut?
We have some confirmation on some of these questions. Andrew is out. Looks like there will be no Amazing Spider-Man 3 but Sinister Six appears to be on course.
Apparently, Marvel is going for a young Spider-Man. We’re talking about Mid Town High. Not high school senior who graduates in the first movie like his past two origin stories.

What is still not clear is who will be Spider-Man. First glance is Peter Parker, the original man behind the mask. But, a little while ago, Marvel comics killed off Peter Parker for a new hero. Mile Morales. Shucks, Marvel’s really been pushing for new faces. Thor a woman. Captain American is the former Falcon. Did I say Thor a woman?
For me, I like the idea of going back to a young hero. My personal favorite version of Spidey is Ultimate. I think the video game that came out under the same title and storyline got me hooked. Plus, you got to play as Spidey AND Venom, and you actually was cheering for both guys. It was crazy! Anyway, I think Marvel should use Ultimate Spider-Man as their main source material for their version of the web slinger.
Marvel’s already heading that way with a young version of the hero, which is why they didn’t bring Andrew into the fold. I liked Andrew and he did look young for his age. But, Marvel must want to go really young. Parker from the Ultimate storyline is one of the youngest. Reports claim that Marvel really wants to make MTH a central location as well, so we can get an idea that high school will be a factor. We’ll see more of Eddie Brock, Flash Thompson, Liz Allen, perhaps MJ again.
That’s actually a good question. Who will Marvel pick as Parker’s love interest, if he’s to have one? MJ or Gwen Stacy. Those are the two most popular and most likely choices. Some folks don’t know that Peter was…or at least tried to be a ladies man. He went with some girls during his time. Anyway, what if it was neither? What if, and this could be fun, but what if Black Cat? I’m not trying to copy off of The Dark Knight Rises and how Batman and Catwoman worked together but she was an anti hero at best. But, it’s an idea for this Spider Man. Plus, Black Cat was obsessed with Spidey. Wouldn’t it be just all kinds of fun if she reacted to Peter’s age just like in the comics? If you don’t know, I don’t want to spoil it for you. It’s pretty interesting.
You could get into all sorts of craziness with Spider-Woman too. Let’s slow down, though.
The big question in all of this is who will actually be behind the mask. I think once you figure that out, you know what type of movie to brace for. Peter vs Miles. Now, with Peter, you have familiarity. With Miles, Marvel can go bold with a new face. Consider this: Sony still ends up doing Spidey movies. Most likely, they will use Peter Parker. So, I’m thinking, maybe use Miles if you’re Marvel. Would it be confusing if two studios were using the same hero, but then they were different stories of that same character? Instead, use two characters, two costumes, and it’s a little easier to follow.
Either way, I think Marvel should crack open that version of Spidey. I mean, we already did Amazing. Let’s look at Ultimate or Spectacular. Marvel can create it’s own title and version.
The first Spider Man movies had elements of all kinds of source material combined to create a Spider Man. This time, I’m making the case that Marvel should stick primarily with one Spider Man. It’ll be all the more fun to compare with the comics since we know the source material. I think go with Miles, but I also think that maybe start with Peter and then have that moment with Miles witnessing what he witnesses that makes him put on the mask.
So, essentially, for that standalone movie in 2017, it’s Miles’ origin story. Keep an eye on him, with Peter Parker in the background. In fact, we never see Peter, we just see Spider Man. Have Miles go through his “with great power” moment and finish the movie off with him avenging stuff. Boom. As long as you don’t look into Peter’s story, the movie shouldn’t be too complicated like ASM 2 or Spider Man 3. Keep it focused on Miles. But, if you do a Peter movie, you have even more to work with and perhaps I should save those details for another post. This one’s long enough.
So, I gotta know, if Marvel was going to center in on one version of Spider Man, which would it be? Regardless, should we go with Miles or Peter? The standalone movie is slated for two short years from now. I would imagine in the next few months we’d have a much better idea of where Marvel’s going. My gut says Peter, but I’d love to see Miles.
