Man’s Obituary Lists “Uppercut From Batman” As Cause Of Death
By Nick Tylwalk
The Ledger, the newspaper of Lakeland, Florida, has a policy that it won’t publish anyone’s obituary without a cause of death. That was a problem for the family of Stephen Merrill, a 31-year old man who died suddenly and left his loved ones without anything to tell the paper.
Since Merrill was a big comic book fan, one of his close friends, Brandon Moxam, invented a possible explanation that made everyone laugh.
“I made a joke,” Moxam said to Tampa Bay’s WFTS. “Say the cause of death was an ‘uppercut from Batman.’”
That almost didn’t fly with The Ledger, but another friend was able to convince the paper to do it for Merrill’s family, who appreciated the humor involved.
Merrill’s funeral involved numerous nods to comics, and attendees wore super hero shirts. Yet it’s not Batman, but a Marvel hero who reminds his fiancée of Merrill the most.
“Captain America was about helping others and so was Stephen,” she said to WFTS. “He left an impression on people if you ever came in contact with him, he was your friend.”
That does sound a bit like Steve Rogers, or Sam Wilson, for that matter. Still, it’s DC who Moxam said he hopes will hear about the story and do something for the people Merrill left behind.
So, how about it DC?
