The basic premise of Gotham is a solid one. It’s supposed to show us how Gotham City became a place so bogged down in crime and corruption that it takes a vigilante dressed like a bat to get it back on track. Along the way, it’s giving us a look at how some members of Batman’s rogues gallery, probably the greatest in all of comics, became the villains we all know and love.

One of the criticisms of Gotham is that it seems to be rushing too quickly toward giving fans all of the big names too soon. Along with the Penguin, who’s been a major character from the beginning, it’s already set up Catwoman, Poison Ivy, the Riddler, Scarecrow, Mr. Zsasz and more, plus a recent episode started down the path toward the Joker. Who’s going to be left for Season 2?

Fortunately, the writers have been dabbling in lesser known characters along the way, like the Electrocutioner. What I’m saying is that they haven’t gone far enough. It’s time to really scrape the bottom of the barrel to see if they can handle the absolute dregs from the Dark Knight’s long list of foes.

It shouldn’t be too difficult to come up with compelling takes on the origins of the Penguin or the Riddler (the jury is still out on the Joker, though), but if the Gotham writers can make these 10 villains work in a way that makes sense, I’ll trust them to do anything.

Bonus Character: This one isn’t on the list because he’s not a villain, but now that we have “Bruce Wayne, Boy Detective” established, can we please see him go undercover as “Matches” Malone? I just think it would be really funny to see a rich kid going undercover in the seedier parts of Gotham City to get information.

No? Fine, let’s just get to the lame villains …
