Joss Whedon defends Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3 is widely regarded as the worst Spider-Man film. Whilst I’m not in that camp because I actually quite enjoyed Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, I can definitely understand people’s anger at Venom being done so poorly, the ‘too-many-villains’ syndrome, and that God-awful dance number that emo-Peter Parker had to randomly undertake.

However someone slightly more important and knowledgeable on the matter than me has also come out in defense of Sam Raimi’s third Spider-Man movie. Who? I hear you ask. Well, it’s only the man responsible for arguably the biggest and possibly the best (before Captain America 2 came along anyway) superhero movie of all time – Joss Whedon.

Joss Whedon brought us the first Avengers movie, ‘Avengers Assemble’ and knocked it out of the park in bringing together the various individual heroes in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe for one riotous comic book romp. Now Whedon has been handed the keys to the sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron and is set to bring us an even bigger film, with even more superheroes!

Although it’s not such an easy task as Whedon hinted when he recently spoke to Empire magazine about the problems with adding Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into the film, in particular referencing the difficulty of shoe-horning in their origin and back story amidst the pre-existing plot. It was during this answer that he defended Raimi’s Spider-Man 3

"“They have an origin but it’s largely described. They’re already good to go by the time we’re up and running. You don’t want to fall into Spider-Man 3 territory – and I say that as a guy who actually thinks pretty well of that movie, there’s some great stuff in that movie – but there comes a point where you’re overloaded with frontstory, backstory, origin story and it becomes very hard to juggle. My instinct is always, ‘Don’t put in more, work with what you have.”"

So there you go guys, the man behind the biggest comic book movie to date that managed umpteen different characters fairly well is praising a movie that is quite often unfairly criticised for having too many characters. Could Spider-Man 3 have been better? Oh, hell yes! But it wasn’t the worst thing ever. That was Green Lantern.
