Support grows for Tobey Maguire to return as Marvel’s Spider-Man
By Daniel Wood
Tobey Maguire was the first Spider-Man which is a fact that shouldn’t be understated! He portrayed Peter Parker for a full trilogy of Spider-Man films and all-in-all did a pretty good job! Then Sam Raimi left and the Spider-Man cinematic universe was rebooted with Andrew Garfield taking over as the Webhead!
But now that Marvel have some semblance of control over Spider-Man following the historic (that’s right, I said historic) deal between them and Sony, allowing Spidey to appear in their movies, leading to a reboot of the franchise yet again there’s rampant speculation as to who could be the next Spider-Man.

To which some people are saying “Why not the first?” Josh Machan is certainly one of the people in this camp and he’s written an article on Movie Pilot explaining why Tobey Maguire should return and be the next Spider-Man in the characters cinematic history! And to be honest I’m really not sure how I feel about the idea.
I mean it’s almost certainly not going to happen because Marvel are believed to be looking for a younger Peter Parker than both Maguire and Garfield so that they can place the character back in high-school (and also get more films out of them, obviously) so Maguire would not fit the bill at all!
Machan does however make a convincing point about the dramatic effect of Spider-Man unmasking during the Civil War storyline. Machan posits that it would absolutely blow the roof off of the cinema if Marvel’s new Spider-Man was to unmask and reveal himself to be Sony’s old Spider-Man all along!
Josh also shares this video from Youtube courtesy of the channel Sam’s Views who goes on a pretty lengthy rant about why Tobey Maguire was the perfect iteration of a cinematic Spider-Man and why Andrew Garfield was literally the worst thing to happen to Spider-Man.
I think I fall somewhere in between where I feel that they both do a good job? Is that too indecisive of me? Am I being annoying non-committal? Perhaps I’m just too nice for my own good. Who knows. But I imagine as you guys are reading this you’ll have your own opinions on who was the better Spider-Man, and whether or not Maguire should return won’t you? Feel free to share them in the comments below! Honestly, we actually encourage it!
Anyway, check out Josh’s article on Movie Pilot to read his idea about bringing back Tobey and why it’d work in full! Or check out Tobey Maguire in action in this brilliant Spider-Man sit-com introduction. Peace out! … I really need to work on an end of article tag-line..
