Bye Bye Fish? Jada Pinkett Smith Doubts She’ll Be Back For Gotham Season 2

Fish Mooney, we hardly knew you.

One of the truly original characters created for Gotham, the uncompromising crime boss played by Jada Pinkett Smith has had a wild ride during the show’s first season, but it might soon be coming to an end. While appearing on Live With Kelly & Michael, the actress was pretty blunt when asked if she’d be back for a second season:

"I don’t think so, I signed for a year and the year’s up."

That leads to an obvious question: does Pinkett Smith know something concerning her character’s fate prior to the end of this season — as in, is Mooney going to be swimming with the fishes? Or is this merely her way of saying she’d like to move on to other projects?

Her subsequent answer to Michael Strahan’s comment that he’s holding out hope for seeing Mooney at some point down the road didn’t close the door entirely, so maybe we’d see her as a guest star in just a couple episodes or something. The Wrap tried getting a comment from Fox but got no answer as of yet.

Though Pinkett Smith was one of the bigger names in the cast of Gotham, the strength of its structure is that outside of Jim Gordon and Oswald Cobblepot, it is truly an ensemble series. The writers can easily shift more of the focus to other characters to accommodate almost anyone who would leave.

Catch Fish while you can in the remaining Season 1 episodes of Gotham, Monday nights at 8 pm on Fox.
