Reaction To Melissa Benoist In Supergirl Costume

My editor, Nick Tylwalk, gave us a first look at Melissa Benoist wearing her Supergirl costume.  But how are fans really reacting to the suit changes?  I — being a fan of anything Superman related — can tell you that it pretty much does the job.  I was hoping for a bit more of a dramatic update, but they’ve kept it pretty classic.

The costume was designed by Colleen Atwood, an eight-time Oscar nominee whose most famous works include costumes for Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Into the Woods (2014), and Snow White and the Huntsman (2012).  Atwood is also the design talent behind the other Berlanti-produced superhero shows Arrow and The Flash.

Though the picture isn’t in the best lighting, we can still see that it’s pretty faithful to its comic source material.  The suit has been sort of enhanced with red accents and knee-high boots.  On top of that, Supergirl seems to be wearing crimson leggings now.  The textured material of the blue top and overall darker hue seems to also pay homage to Superman’s outfit in Man of Steel (2013).

A closer inspection of the House of El chest insignia reveals that they’ve opted to forego the yellow background and make it more of a yellow outline.  Overall, the insignia does seem to be the more classic “S” than the one seen in Man of Steel (2013), where the top serif is much more exaggerated.

Supergirl, since its announcement, has definitely been on the fast track of production with Melissa Benoist being cast in the titular role less than two months ago.  Recent news include the announcements of former Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star Dean Cain and former Supergirl (1984) star Helen Slater being cast in the show.  Other casting announcements include David Harewood, Chyler Leigh, Calista Flockhart, and Mehcad Brooks — joining as love interest Jimmy Olsen.

For the pilot villain, it was decided in January that the obscure Lumberjack will be Supergirl’s first nemesis.  As of this report, the role has not yet been cast and the producers are looking for someone looking like Rory McCann — the actor who plays The Hound on HBO’s Game of Thrones.

CBS’s new Supergirl series is from executive producer Greg Berlanti — the man behind The CW’s Arrow and The Flash.  The premise for the show will center around Kara Zor-El embracing her newly discovered powers:

"The hourlong drama, which received a hefty series commitment, centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Benoist will play Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers (which she shares with her famous cousin, Superman). Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She’s still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn’t know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she’s even given a new moniker: Supergirl."

Melissa Benoist has the honor of being only the third actress to portray Superman’s cousin in a live-action incarnation.  Previous actresses to play Supergirl were Helen Slater in Supergirl (1984) and Laura Vandervoort in The CW’s Smallville starring Tom Welling as a young Clark Kent / Kal-El before he embraces his destiny as Superman.

CBS’s Supergirl is set to premiere in September 2015.
