Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Brainstorm Session – “Who You Really Are”
This week’s Agents of SHIELD episode “Who You Really Are” divulged much information about Inhumans and gave us some Asgardian insight into the future of things, and by that I mean we have no idea what the future may hold.
In this round of brainstorming, I give a lot of focus on Bobbi and Mack’s secret with theories that probably won’t come true, but we can hope!
Overarching Questions
1. Who is “Backup”?
It’s the burning question Hunter asked in the last thirty seconds of Tuesday’s episode. While last week’s theory of Tony Stark could still hold true, I wonder if it might not be the Avengers’ own Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye? Back in January, Jeremy Renner tweeted about being in costume again, which seems a little late for re-shoots for Age of Ultron.
Hawkeye is probably one of the more achievable Avengers cameos to have on Agents of SHIELD. Plus, he has a history with Mockingbird in the comics. Why not bring in Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye? And it would make sense for Mack to be against Hunter joining their cause if the one running it all is another one of Bobbi’s exes. That would make things awkward.
That being said…
2. Who are Mack and Bobbi working for?
This is another key question I keep coming back to. She blatantly states it’s not Hydra (which would be stupid at this point in the show), and while it could be Stark Industries, it’s not very likely. Someone’s comment was AIM, which we saw in Iron Man 3, but do we know what exactly happened with AIM at the end of all that? Maybe this would be their way of rebuilding themselves–trying to get whatever is left of SHIELD.
Our own Nick suggested that since they have backgrounds working with the CIA in the comics, they may be spying on the new iteration of SHIELD for the government. A simplistic solution, one that won’t waste money on cameos, but may seem a little more lackluster than something comic book-related.
3. What was Sif’s warning about?
It was spewed in Asgardian vagueness, warning about tides you cannot change, forces that cannot be reckoned with, et cetera. Dealing with Inhumans and superpowers out of their realm may be the obvious choice; how will SHIELD handle the transformations of many when they can barely tolerate the transformation of one in their ranks.
But could it also mean bigger forces in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe? Could Heimdall be keeping tabs on what Tony Stark is doing in regards to Age of Ultron? Is this how Agents of SHIELD will tie into that come May? Could he be seeing the rise of Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and others?
Again, Asgardian vagueness could really mean anything in the MCU. Maybe she was talking of the Guardians of the Galaxy, how Rocket is blowing up moons again, and is targeting Earth, so we’ll see Chris Pratt on our televisions again sooner rather than later.

It would be easy to say Thor with the inclusion of Lady Sif. Let’s go with the even easier route and say Hawkeye again! Add on to the after-credits stinger of Mack strangling Hunter until he passes out, include him making a hasty phone call on a burner cell to “Backup” about a potential threat of interference and what should he do about it? Pan over to the other end of the phone call and show Clint Barton off in some wide open field or surrounded by machinery.
“Didn’t Bobbi put protocols into place to take care of this kind of thing?” he replies, bored and passive-aggressive. “Ask her to deal with it. She’s good at cleaning up messes.”

Fun Theory I’m Making Up Right Now
How hard would it be to get James Spader, in the episode before the tie-in to Avengers: Age of Ultron, to do some sort of ominous voice over? Even if it’s just a post-credits stinger in the Tuesday episode before the premiere on May 1st. He’s already in the TV-sphere in NBC’s The Blacklist. I don’t know how difficult it is to switch between networks, but it is Marvel/Disney, and they do have a lot of money they can throw around.
I suppose this is less of a fun theory and more of an idea.

“Where in the World Is Grant Ward?”
It’s like he isn’t even part of this show anymore! What are he and Agent 33 even doing off-screen? Still having those sleepovers and talking about their feelings?

Look, by the time this season has wrapped up, I have to believe we will have some sort of Avengers cameo other than Nick Fury. Am I leaning heavily on said cameos? Yes. Are these a guarantee? No. But don’t you think a show about superheroes deserves to have some sort of superhero presence other than the Inhumans?
Next week’s episode shows promise for some lesser-known supervillains. That should be a riot.
