Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Recap – Season 3, Episodes 12 and 13: The Battle for New York
By Nick Tylwalk
Turtle-Powered Recap, Part 2: Raph wonders if the plan they have will work, as it involves the Mighty Mutanimals invading TCRI to open a portal to Dimension X while the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sail on through in the Turtle Blimp. The Mutanimals quickly hold up their end, allowing the Turtles to cross between dimensions — unknowingly followed by Kraang Sub-Prime.
Once in Dimension X, Mikey (or as he calls himself, Savage Mikey) becomes the de facto leader due to his greatly increased intelligence. He’s able to sense the whereabouts of the transformed people, who are stuck on several floating islands. Back on Earth, the Mutanimals find themselves in a ton of trouble, and the Turtles aren’t in the best shape either since a giant space worm pops a hole in the blimp.
Mikey is able to defeat the worm singlehandedly, but while the Turtles are sure the Mutanimals have things under control at TCRI, Slash is the last mutant standing, and he reluctantly surrenders. The Kraang shut down the portal, capturing all of Slash’s team.
The Turtles are also marooned, though they spot a Kraang stealth ship nearby. Kraang Sub-Prime tries to stop them, but Mikey is able to fool him and figure out how to pilot the ship, something even Donatello can’t manage. Makes you wonder why Michelangelo doesn’t just stay in Dimension X full time, eh? A two-headed, lightning-breathing dragon (it reminds me a bit of King Ghidorah, minus a head) chases the stealth ship, which the Turtles end up crashing into the Technodrome, which is where they were headed anyway.
Slash is depressed that he got them all captured, though Leatherhead gives him a pep talk. Inside the Technodrome, the Turtles make their way to its control room, only to find that it’s a trap of sorts, full of giant whirling blades and a bunch of Kraang.
What it does have is tons of mutagen, which is uses as a fuel supply, so it’s perfect for the Turtles’ plan to change all the humans back to normal. As Dr. Rockwell uses his telekinesis to free the Mutanimals, Donnie injects his retro-mutagen into the Technodrome’s fuel tank, and Mikey quickly converts the ship to run on the new stuff. The Mutanimals rally to re-open the portal, and the Turtles are able to bathe the captured humans in retro-mutagen and teleport them back to NYC.
Kraang Sub-Prime and some friends crash the party, leaving only Leo to hold them off (since Raph is flying the Techodrome and the others are working on restoring and transporting the rest of the humans). He manages to pull it off with some help from those whirling blades I mentioned, and Rockwell beams the Turtles out (over Raph’s objections) right before Sub-Prime is about to stomp on them. Also, they used up the remainder of the retro-mutagen, so the Technodrome is going to crash, as Kraang Sub-Prime learns to his dismay.
Back in NYC, we see people reappearing and Kraang blinking out, on their way back to Dimension X thanks to Rockwell. April reunites with her father, now also restored to human form. How about the Mutanimals? They made it out in one piece as well. Leo apologizes to Slash, who says he simply modeled himself after the best leader he knows — Leo, of course. The mutants all feel it’s time to celebrate, as NYC is back to as normal as it’s going to get.
Favorite Moment: Atfer defeating the space worm, Mikey shares a bit of his Dimension X-enhanced wisdom: “Kraang worms’ weak spots are their butt faces.” Only on this show would that make any sense!
Final Thought: I’m pretty happy that it didn’t take the entire season to free New York, which would have gotten old after a while. The focus now should be back on the feud with Shredder and the Foot, as there are certainly scores to settle there. You also get the feeling that we probably haven’t seen the last of the Kraang, but I’d be okay if they were off plotting revenge for a while before their next appearance.
