Is There Trouble Ahead For Firestorm On The Flash?

After a rough start to his career as a super-powered being, what with wandering around with amnesia, not knowing how to separate back into the two people who fused together to form him and almost detonating in a nuclear explosion, Firestorm got a temporary happy ending a few weeks ago on The Flash. Ronnie Raymond and Dr. Martin Stein left together for Pittsburgh, looking for help from one of Stein’s colleagues to get a handle on how to control their powers when united.

Unbeknownst to them, the man pursuing them for his own evil ends, General Eiling, looks like he may have kicked the bucket at the furry hands of Grodd. So everything’s hunky dory for the Nuclear Man, right?

For now, yes. But by the end of this season, or at least by the time that Flash/Arrow spinoff that’s in the works takes shape, that might not be the case. When the super hero team-up show was first announced, Victor Garber, who plays Stein, was one of the first actors announced, but Robbie Amell, who plays Raymond, was conspicuously absent. Surely, that was just a matter of him not being signed on yet, or so I thought.

It doesn’t sound that way from today’s Entertainment Weekly interview with executive producers Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti, though.

"One of the main burning questions after the project’s announcement was why Robbie Amell was missing from the cast list, considering he makes up the other half of Firestorm, Ronnie Raymond. Unfortunately, it sounds like bad news could be on the horizon as Berlanti admits there is a particular reason for his absence, but “I can’t say why.”"

Ah, that sounds like Caitlin Snow might be in for another dose of heartbreak. As in, had Ronnie, lost him, got him back, saw him have to leave only to lose him for good again. It’s totally in keeping with the emotional roller coaster rides that both of the DC shows on The CW can be.

My guess is that once Harrison Wells is outed for good as the Reverse-Flash, Barry Allen is going to need all the help he can get. Firestorm will return to Central City, and something will happen that leaves Raymond out of the picture — and possibly even dead for real this time. That doesn’t mean the end of Firestorm (we’ve seen Jason Rusch on The Flash, after all), but that scenario is full of potential in terms of getting Stein onto another show.

It could also provide the impetus for Caitlin to turn bad if she blames the heroes for Raymond’s death. I’m obviously getting way ahead of things here, but if even part of this takes place, it would be all the more reason to enjoy any appearances Amell makes before the end of this season. We might not be seeing him after that.
