Rumor: Ben Affleck Batman In Suicide Squad?

Everyone’s favorite super hero scooper is at it again. Umberto Gonzalez of Latino Review, who has a history of being able to ferret out info about comic book movies long before they are officially announced, has been dropping some fun rumors on his Instagram account the past few days. None, though, were bigger than the one he revealed earlier today:

"Details about THE GOD DAMN #BATMAN in#SUICIDESQUAD! #SPOILER #WARNING According to sources, in the film Batman is some sort of big boogeyman that the government REALLY hates. Get this, prior to the events in #BatmanvSuperman, THE JOKER is the only one to really ever meet him or know him and that’s why he’s so important to Amanda Waller. They have footage of Batman in action which they watch. There is a bit of dialogue where they say Batman is the key to tracking down all “the supers.” Very cool stuff. #DC #DCCU#DCCOMICS #THEJOKER #AMANDAWALLER#THEDARKKNIGHTRETURNS"

If that turns out to be true, that’s huge news that also is perfectly logical, given the history that Batman and Waller have in other media. In the comics, an early subplot of the superb first volume of Suicide Squad was Batman’s investigation into the team, which ended in a stalemate when Waller threatened to use the resources available to her to discover his secret identity. He never really let it go, though, and the Justice League and Suicide Squad would cross paths more than once after that. They’ve also butted heads in DC’s animated projects as well.

More than that, this rumor would provide a reason for the Joker to be in the film, something I’ve argued in the past would be a mistake. There are enough great characters already part of the team’s history that the movie shouldn’t need the Joker to help sell it, but at least this way, there would be a valid reason for Waller to want him around.

We’ll have to wait and see if Gonzalez has sources that are on the money on this one. It doesn’t sound like Ben Affleck would be needed on set for very long even if this is legit, but since so many of the other characters are sharing the spotlight with him in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s nice to think that this new Dark Knight will be very prominent in DC’s movie plans going forward.
