Amazing Spider-Man #16 Review

With Spider-Verse over, Pete’s back to plain ol’ Earth-616, and Slott is back to writing a Parker Industries/Black Cat story in Amazing Spider-Man #16.

While it is in a way refreshing to see the comic get back to “regular” life, there really wasn’t that much content this time around and it largely feels like setup for the next issue. We see a brief fight scene that’s more exposition than action, and an even briefer scene of Pete heading into a board meeting with the Department of Corrections to secure backing for his super-villain prison.

The main takeaways from the issue are that Peter is weakened from his fight with Morlun, but optimistic about his company, and that Parker Industries is about to have a run in with the villain Ghost. Besides these elements, there’s a side story featuring the increasingly uncharacteristic Black Cat hell bent on being a villain -and we/she discover that her luck powers are inexplicably empowered by her darker tendencies. How convenient right?

Humberto Ramos returns as the comic’s penciler, and brings his usual sharp, cartoony but highly expressive/dynamic during action sequences art. His faces are different after getting used to Coipel’s or Camuncoli’s art during the Spider-Verse, but his art and body design are very clean. I enjoyed his art before, and that hasn’t changed a bit.

It may not have the zaniness and high stakes of the Spider-Verse, and it may be slightly uneventful, but Amazing Spider-Man #16 does foreshadow some excitement to come, and hopefully the plot will pickup in the coming issues.
