Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Brainstorm Session – “One Of Us”
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD gave us a ridiculous episode this week with multiple supervillains and Cal being his normal, crazy, entertaining self. But there’s a lot of questions still hanging in the air.
Overarching Questions
1.Why didn’t Gordon take Skye?
Even Cal brings this up with Gordon after the fact: Skye is the one who’s newly transformed. She’s the one who needs the help. All he’s doing is creating a little chaos for Coulson and SHIELD to deal with. While it makes sense for Gordon to take Cal because of the attention he’s drawing to “specials,” it’s curious that he left Skye with SHIELD.
After all, Skye’s mother took care of the Inhumans after their Terrigenesis–why wouldn’t he take Skye along? Perhaps it’s not her time just yet? I would say maybe he didn’t know Skye was turned, but we definitely saw him at the winter finale sensing more of them had transformed. Did he not know it was Skye? Does he believe she’s too powerful?
2. Where does Cal fit in?
He wants to be on the side of the Inhumans because that’s what his wife was and that’s where his daughter should/will be, but Gordon outright dismisses him as a “science experiment” and says it’s not his job to judge. Cal seems too resigned to who he is about to face to put up more of a fight, and I have to wonder if we will see just who he talks to.
When his disciplinary hearing is all said and done, though, where does that leave Cal? Locked away in an Inhuman prison? Or back on the street to cause more problems? I feel like they will let him back into the world with either someone watching him or some sort of monitoring technology to keep him in check. Perhaps they recruit him to bring in Skye just to placate him.
3. Who’s in charge of the “real” SHIELD?
Obviously in the preview for next week’s episode, it’s not anyone we know just yet: Edward James Olmos as Robert Gonzales, but you know there’s someone above them. And I know I’m rehashing what I’ve been saying for three weeks now, but: It’s Hawkeye. It might explain where he was during Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Keep in mind that while we know Fury and Coulson are alive, as far as the other SHIELD knows, both are presumed dead. They may not know Coulson is heading the new SHIELD, unless Bobbi/Mack mentioned something, and then they may believe it’s an LMD that’s not fit to take over after Fury. Or they don’t believe Coulson is fit to take over for Fury and somehow stole the “toolbox” with SHIELD’s remains. I don’t believe any of the Avengers know Coulson is alive.
And while you may say that Hawkeye is more of a grunt than a leader, this could be something Black Widow put him up to because they have that kind of relationship. Budapest and all that. Natasha is on Fury’s side and if she doesn’t know Coulson’s alive, then she will want to get the toolbox back from whoever “stole” it.

Weekly Avengers Cameo
War Machine/Iron Patriot! With two SHIELDS apparently alive and kicking, wouldn’t you think the US government would want to check in on both and see what the heck is going on? Who better to do it than War Machine? Rhodey can just make a quick but dramatic entrance at both headquarters, maybe evening springing Hunter, who’s swearing profusely at everyone and everything at the “real” SHIELD.

Fun Theory I’m Making Up Right Now
Five bucks says “Robert Gonzales” is just a pseudonym for Norman Osborne. Actually, don’t take me up on that bet because I don’t believe these Agents of SHIELD episodes were shot after the Spider-Man announcement, so I doubt that’s actually a thing. Since this is the “theory” section, I’m going to run with it anyway.
Robert Gonzales will turn out to be Norman Osborne, attempting to bring Oscorp back into the good graces of society (think Stark Technologies in Marvel’s Agent Carter). He hides this under the guise of a “real” SHIELD, trying to build up Oscorp on whatever remains after The Winter Soldier. Hey, it’s a way to step up their game and hit the ground running! What’s standing in their way?

“Crazy Cal’s RV Adventures.” Skye’s dad and all his supervillain cohorts driving around the rural Midwest, eating in diners that don’t seem to care how ridiculous they look, breaking mugs, causing a ruckus. I’m picturing this as kind of the Nasty Boys from X-Men, which would be all kinds of hilarious.
Please make this a reality.

We’re drawing closer and closer to the episodes that will (most likely) tie into Avengers: Age of Ultron. Except that it feels like we’re setting up for Captain America: Civil War, which isn’t for another year.
Next week’s episode, “Love In The Time Of Hydra,” gives us our first glimpse of Grant Ward since the winter finale. I feel like I hate him more than I should, probably because we haven’t seen him in a while, but I do love evil Ward. I want to see what he and Agent 33 have been up to, and I really want that Hawkeye cameo.
