New Spidey title ‘Spider-Island’ brings back Spider-Girl for Secret Wars
By Daniel Wood
That’s right. Spider-Man gets a new title to join ‘Renew your Vows’ heading into Secret Wars. However this one is helmed by Flash Thompson as Agent Venom with Spider-Woman (formerly known as Spider-Girl, or MC2 Spider-Girl, or Mayday Parker) as back-up. Meh, Peter Parker’s not that important anyway.
The titular ‘Spider Island is written by Christos Gage with Paco Diaz providing art and will see the return of the Spider Island storyline in a ‘What-If?’ scenario. This time Spider-Queen, the original villain of the series, has won and rules Manhattan after defeating Peter Parker, who is missing. Flash Thompson as Agent Venom is leading an underground resistance against her.
If that’s not enough Tom DeFalco, Sal Buscema and Ron Frenz have combined to provide a backstory continuing on Spider-Girl (now Spider-Woman’s) narrative from the end of the Spider-Verse. So we’ll see her in her dad’s costume, operating under a new name, with Uncle Ben as a grandfather for Benjy.
Having no idea what happened in Spider Island I’m more intrigued than I am nostalgic. However I’m happy to see more of Agent Venom and I’m thrilled to be seeing more of Mayday Parker so this is a win for me!
The title is scheduled for July 2015 and will be twice-monthly!
