Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Brainstorm Session – “Love In The Time Of Hydra”

Love In The Time Of Hydra” gave us a lot of exposition and a lot of set-up for the giant showdown that’s about to happen in the next Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD episode. I have a feeling most of the questions I ask in this week’s brainstorm will be answered, but isn’t that always the hope?

Overarching Questions

1. Will Bobbi switch sides?

For all of Mack’s and Gonzales’s concerns about a Coulson-run SHIELD, Bobbi stayed very quiet. Maybe the writers are trying to keep her mysterious, but it seems kind of reckless to me. She already did the undercover agent once, being in Hydra at the start of the season, and that was straightforward enough. With so many layers to this portrayal of Mockingbird, keeping her quiet isn’t the best idea.

I wonder if her feelings for Hunter won’t sway her. Of course she “knows better” than to listen to her emotions and she’s never done so in the past (it’s why her and Hunter never worked out), but what if it turns out Hawkeye is behind the “real” SHIELD and their relationship isn’t in a good place like hers with Hunter?

2. Where is Grant Ward going with all this?

“But you seem so well adjusted” has to be the line that cracked me up the most in this week’s episode, straight from the mouth of Agent 33. No way is Grant Ward well adjusted and no way is he just trying to find a romantic relationship where he can settle down and spend the rest of his days relaxing out of the public eye.

No, he has a greater plan, and while he “plans” on letting 33 kill Bakshi, I have a feeling they’re brainwashing him for something bigger than just killing him straightaway. Neither is he looking for love with Agent 33; it’s all just an elaborate act that makes me hate him as a person but love him as a character. She’s just another tool for him to use to get what he wants, a much easier target than Skye.

3. So really, what is Grant Ward doing?

Causing a ruckus. Bakshi will be the key to something else–perhaps infiltrating what’s left of Hydra? I feel like Ward has no allegiance to any organization and just plans on ruining all of them. Will he care about two different SHIELDs?

I think he’s on a revenge kick. He got back at his family (by murdering them all, mind you) and what with Skye shooting him, he’ll want back at SHIELD, too. If/when he finds out about Skye’s transformation, I have a feeling the scorned lover inside him will want retribution at Coulson and SHIELD for hurting Skye.

Then he’ll realize Skye hates him and go after her, too.

4. Where is Agent Koenig?

A little Patton Oswalt wouldn’t hurt any of these episodes, and it’s been a while since we’ve seen any of the Koenigs. I believe the last mention was by Coulson saying he put them out on a mission. Their humor and lighthearted nature might actually help lighten any of these recent SHIELD episodes. And how big is the mission they’re on? Maybe they’re tailing Ward!

Weekly Avengers Cameo

Black Widow. She doesn’t need any lines because all you need is her lurking in the background of any scene with Ward and Agent 33 in public, keeping tabs on them from afar. Heck, you could use a Scarlett Johansson lookalike, have her wearing hoodies and big sunglasses. We just need the hair… and the acrobatics.

To make it hilarious, have the Koenigs about four steps behind Black Widow at all times, trying not to draw attention to themselves.

Fun Theory I’m Making Up Right Now

I feel like I’ve exhausted myself with how much I want a Hawkeye cameo in Agents of SHIELD that I’m struggling with this week’s theory.

At the end of the next episode, after the SHIELD vs. SHIELD takes place and everyone has chosen a side, Clint Barton arrives in the midst of a “SHIELD” meeting, causing Bobbi to start stuttering, especially when he sits down in Gonzales’s chair and starts asking drill-down questions until she embarrassingly asks what he’s doing here.

“I’m running the show,” he answers with a knowing smirk. “Do you have a problem with that, Bobbi?”

And she stutters her way though the rest of the conversation, much like Hunter’s response to her arrival at SHIELD’s HQ back in the fifth episode of season two.

Weekly Webisode Idea

“Bobbi and Hunter’s Arizona Road Trip.” I want to know what happened on this particular trip compared to others. Was this personal or work-related? And what Eagles song drove Hunter insane? “Hotel California?” I know it drives me insane.

It sounds like we will get a solid look at Bobbi’s intentions and beliefs in the upcoming episode when SHIELD goes up against “SHIELD.”

Am I the only one this curious about Ward? It’s funny because I honestly didn’t miss him in those first few episodes back after the winter break, but now that they’ve shown me a glimpse, I want more.

Where will everyone end up next week? Which side of the line will they stand on? And how kickass is that Bobbi/May showdown going to be? I think it’s going to have to top that May versus May fight, but that’s a tough bar to reach.
