16. Iron Man – A visit from Nick

Marvel got a lot better at doing post-credits scenes over time, but the first one was still pretty significant. Tony Stark comes home and is surprised when J.A.R.V.I.S. welcomes him but immediately sounds like he’s run out of batteries.

That’s because there’s a figure lurking in the dark. It’s Nick Fury, mocking Stark’s recent revelation that he is Iron Man, asking whether he really thinks he’s the only super hero in the world.

Has Tony given that any thought? Probably not, and neither have we, the fans. Actually, scratch that. We know there are other super heroes in this world, we just aren’t sure at this point we’re going to see them or not. Iron Man is distributed by Paramount, and no one is sure yet if Marvel’s movie-making ambitions are going to pay off or not.

What’s heartening is Fury’s assertion that Tony has become part of a bigger universe, even if he doesn’t know it yet. That turns out to be true, because four years later, we were in theaters watching The Avengers. But it’s this first mention of the “Avenger Initiative” that gets the ball rolling, so this is one post-credits scene that ended up having massive significance.
