The Flash Synopsis – Season 1, Episode 17: Tricksters
By Nick Tylwalk
Boom! That’s the sound of the title of this week’s episode of The Flash hitting us with exactly what it’s all about.

It could also be the sound of the Flash blowing up, judging by what we’ve seen from previews so far. Mark Hamill returns to the role of the Trickster, the same one he played in 1990. Even though he’s not the exact same villain as in that one (different universes and all), the writers have paid homage to the previous series by making him a grizzled old criminal, now serving hard time in Iron Heights.
When a copycat arrives in Central City, Barry Allen and the CCPD turn to Hamill’s James Jesse for help, and it all goes wrong from there. Check out the official synopsis of “Tricksters” from The CW:
"A copycat killer who goes by the name “The Trickster” (guest star Devon Graye) starts setting off bombs in Central City. In order to stop the villain, Barry (Grant Gustin) and Joe (Jesse L. Martin) meet with the original Trickster, a criminal mastermind named James Jesse (guest star Mark Hamill), who has been imprisoned for 20 years. Things quickly go from bad to worse when the Tricksters unite and take Henry (John Wesley Shipp) prisoner. Meanwhile, Iris (Candice Patton) asks Eddie (Rick Cosnett) for help with a case, and flashbacks show how Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) came up with the idea for the particle accelerator. Ralph Hemecker directed the episode written by Andrew Kreisberg."
Clips from the show have Hamill’s Trickster making references to the movie Speed, placing the Flash in a situation where he needs to kep moving very fast or else something’s going to explode — probably him.
Though the comic book version of Jesse isn’t an older guy, he really was succeeded in Flash’s Rogues by a younger crook named Axel Walker. So there’s the potential here for some nice links both to previous television and comics here, which should be fun.
I’m also intrigued by the flashbacks that show Wells dreaming up the particle accelerator. Though most of the major players on The Flash are unaware, we know that he’s secretly Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash, and that he’s been marooned in the present for years. Even with his knowledge of future events, it seems strange that he wouldn’t realize the key to his return home was to create the accelerator mishap himself. Unless, that is, he was simply afraid to muck with the timeline, which we know can have unexpected consequences.
You don’t want to miss a pop culture icon guest starring on “Tricksters,” which airs Tuesday at 8 pm on The CW.
