Supermarket forced to recall exploding Spider-Man costumes

It could be a Spider-Man comic storyline, the tinkerer determined to tarnish Spider-Man’s image by tinkering with his his merchandise and turning it into a bomb. However this is real life people, this isn’t an April Fools Day joke, althought it sounds like one. Asda, a British based supermarket, actually have had to recall a child’s Spider-Man outfit because it raises a potential health-risk … By exploding.

British tabloids reported on the Slaughter family experiencing the Spider-Man costume blow-out having bought it for their son to wear on world book day. How does a Spider-Man costume explode I hear you ask, surely it’s just fabric? Well, no, this particular one had a detachable breast plate that lit up and changed colour.

"“I heard this crack and I thought something had come through the window.“The box literally flew across the floor with a huge force and landed at my feet.“When I looked to see what happened I found the bottom part of the batteries had been blown away.“I’m not a scientist and I don’t know much about batteries but this thing is potentially lethal.”"

Asda, being the superheroes that they were didn’t want to cause further harm to innocent members of the public and did what any decent Spider-Man would do. Recall the products and offer a full refund! Here’s their official statement.

"“The wrong batteries have been included inside the costume’s removable light-up unit resulting in a potential safety issue.“The care and safety of our customers is our number one priority, which is why we have taken the precautionary decision to recall the product based on the outcome of our investigation.“This affects Spiderman Light-Up Dress-Up costumes age 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14 years. No other items in our range are affected.“We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”"
