Agents Of SHIELD Synopsis – Season 2, Episode 16: Afterlife

Ah, this is kind of a scary episode title, because “Afterlife” suggests that someone has died or is about to die.

I don’t think that’s actually the case in this week’s new Agents of SHIELD, though the team itself is very much on life support. With the “real SHIELD” under the command of Robert Gonzales taking an active stance in stamping out Phil Coulson’s merry band, May, Fitz and Simmons have been captured, Skye had to go hide with her fellow Inhumans, and Coulson is on the run. Lance Hunter has surfaced and appears loyal to Coulson, and Bobbi Morse might be having a change of heart, but will that be enough?

We’ll see. Here’s the official synopsis of “Afterlife” from Marvel and ABC:

"As Robert Gonzales makes his move, Coulson must do whatever it takes to protect the future of S.H.I.E.L.D. Meanwhile Skye’s journey to control her powers takes a surprising turn when she meets the enigmatic Inhuman named Lincoln, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Tuesday, April 7 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network."

That’s … not really super helpful, but you’ll have this sometimes. With a bunch of episodes still to come this season, it doesn’t feel like the SHIELD vs. SHIELD storyline can carry us all the way through to the finale, but maybe there are more layers to it than we’ve seen thus far. Pacing is everything. That foes for Skye’s subplot as well; figuring out her powers too soon would feel cheap, but it could also get tiresome if it drags on too long.

I’ve still got two questions about the show that relate to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe:

  • Can we get that Hawkeye cameo soon? He was mysteriously absent when Hydra took over SHIELD, but given his ties to the organization, it doesn’t seem right that he’d sit out a fight over its legacy.
  • We know that even though Nick Fury is off the grid, he’s still around. Couldn’t he put a stop to this squabble simply by showing up and putting his support behind one group or the other?

Though I don’t expect answers to either question Tuesday night at 9 pm on ABC, I’ll still be tuned in and watching “Afterlife.” Tweet along with us during the show and be sure to check back with us Wednesday morning for Christina Roberts’ recap and review.
