Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Is Getting A Spin-Off

Take this whatever way you will: Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is getting a spin-off television show, and it’s not an Agent Carter renewal (which I’m still desperate for).

In an article at Entertainment Weekly, it was announced that executive producer Jeffrey Bell (Angel, The X-Files) and SHIELD writer Paul Zbyszewski (Lost, Hawaii Five-0) are quietly planning a spin-off of the current TV series. Straight from the source’s mouth:

"We don’t know…which characters from the current series will be moving over to the proposed spinoff – so let the speculation being on that. There won’t be an implanted pilot episode this season directly setting up the spinoff, either (like how CW launched The Flash out of Arrow). However, story elements that are still to come on SHIELD this year will be used to lay the groundwork for the potential new series. So by the end of the season – assuming the details for this project haven’t already leaked, which is rather unlikely – the spinoff concept should be clear."

It’s all still speculation and bluster at this point, what with Agents of SHIELD still not renewed for a third season (though it’s highly likely) and the potential for the spin-off could simply fall through the cracks.

Now, here are my various thoughts on what this potential spin-off could be, and keep in mind that it’s been said Age of Ultron will shake up the MCU:

  1. Robert Gonzales’s “real” SHIELD, with the likes of Bobbi and Mack as the main characters. It’s the obvious choice, and if they’re letting the rest of season two set it up, this is the easiest route. Make it an elite crew of Bobbi, Gonzales, and Mack tracking down and helping specials (because they’re so concerned with them right now) while Coulson, Deathlok, and crew continue against Hydra.
  2. Bobbi and Mack off doing their own thing as a satellite crew for Coulson. You can’t set up a SHIELD vs. SHIELD and have the dude who came back from the dead lose, so when Coulson regains control, you have to believe his crew isn’t exactly going to trust Bobbi or Mack. Make them off-screen characters and give them their own spy show.
  3. Tony Stark: Director of SHIELD. This would cost way too much money for them to actually produce.
  4. Inhumans. It would be cool to see what happens in Afterlife, what exactly Gordon does, and how cool would it be to see Inhuman characters like Black Bolt and Medusa on the small screen? More backstory chances and things like that. Plus it would be so drastically different than just making a different version of Agents of SHIELD.
  5. Calvin Zabo’s Crazy RV Adventures. After that episode where he rescued all of the Specials, who wouldn’t want to see him trekking across the country in a beat-up RV, causing chaos just below the Inhumans’ radar and eating at crappy diners along the way? Anything more with Skye’s dad has me sold.
  6. Time-Traveling Agent Carter. Coulson stumbles upon a time machine and brings Agent Carter to the future so she can start her own branch of SHIELD in the modern day with new technology and less angry males in charge. Simmons follows her to the end of the earth.

Those last two are all in good fun, though I still think there’s some merit to them. What are your thoughts on a spin-off of Agents of SHIELD? Yea? Nay? Peggy Carter?
