Agents of SHIELD Synopsis – Season 2, Episode 17: Melinda

A character can be a fan favorite even while remaining a bit of an enigma. On Agents of SHIELD, that idea is brought to life in the form of Agent Melinda May. We love the way she kicks ass and demands respect, and we’ve seen just a tad of her softer, more human side in Season 2. But there’s still a whole lot we don’t know about the agent whose nickname is “The Cavalry.”

That’s going to change this week with the episode “Melinda.” If that title wasn’t a big enough clue, ABC’s press release calling it “the secret origin of Melinda May” should do the trick. See? It’s not just people with super powers who get origin stories.

You can also expect more from Skye, who has been holed up in the Inhumans’ refuge but is starting to wonder if she really belongs there. It would be nice if she could control her “gift” before she leaves, as simply showing up without leveling anything might be helpful in preventing Director Coulson’s SHIELD and the “real SHIELD” from destroying each other. Notice that the key word there was ‘might.’

Here’s what Marvel and ABC have to say about “Melinda” in this week’s official synopsis:

"The story of Melinda May’s transformation into “The Cavalry” is revealed as she finds herself at a crossroads in the war between Coulson and Gonzales. As Skye learns more about her true heritage from Lincoln, the truth about the Inhumans will send her in a new direction."

I have to admit that while the Gonzales SHIELD doesn’t interest me much at all, it’s been fun watching Coulson and Lance Hunter forced to work together. Let’s hope that dynamic still finds a way to make itself known this week even with everything else going on. Oh, alright, and further FitzSimmons developments are okay as well.

We’re going to be watching and tweeting during Agents of SHIELD Tuesday night at 9 pm. If you miss “Melinda,” you’ve got two choices: either check back with us Wednesday morning for a full recap and review by Christina Roberts, or head to and take in the Agents of SHIELD After Show with hosts Germar Derron, Stephanie Pressman, Anastasia Washington and Christian G. Lopez. Better yet, do both!
