Report: NBC Gives Up, Cancels Constantine
By Nick Tylwalk
From the very start, Constantine and NBC seemed like a strange match between content and outlet. The network obviously like being left out of the comic book craze, but it ended up with the least stereotypical series of all, one that was much more horror than super hero.

Despite the feeling that Constantine improved steadily over the course of its run, NBC wasn’t thrilled with its ratings, cutting its order off at 13 episodes. Now it seems the network is no longer willing to see if there’s more to come from the show, as Buzzfeed is reporting that Constantine has been canceled. It came via an update to the site’s renewal/cancellation scorecard, and writer Kate Aurthur stood by it on Twitter.
So … that’s it, right? Sites like /Film are saying it’s still possible for another network or cable outlet to rescue Constantine from the eternal abyss, but there are so many comic book properties already in development that it’s hard to envision one of the major TV players coming to its rescue. Even The CW, which is pretty much being propped up entirely by DC properties at this point, would have a hard time fitting it on the schedule, and its presence there would raise inevitable questions about whether it co-existed in the same universe as Arrow and The Flash.
Let’s throw out a dark horse candidate, though: what about Fox? It’s already working on developing Lucifer, which is based on a Vertigo character just like John Constantine — at least he was before being incorporated into the DC Universe proper during the New 52 initiative. Aside from Gotham and Empire, the network basically whiffed on every other drama it tried this season, plus it has FX and its siblings on cable that could always use more promising shows.
The safer bet is that we’ve seen the last of Constantine, which will no doubt make our recapper, Steve Lam, kind of sad. Will you miss it, or are you apathetic about the idea that the series has been cancelled? Leave us a comment below and sound off.
