The Times Captain America Had His Shield Broken
The actual shield was destroyed by Doctor Doom during the Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars crossover story event. Doctor Doom was able to destroy it because he gained the powers of the Beyonder. When the Beyonder regained his powers back, a wave of energy produced a “wish effect” that allowed everyone to realize something they wanted. Captain America wished for his shield back.
Captain America had, at one point, lost his shield in the Atlantic Ocean. When they finally retrieved it, the shield shattered. Tony Stark discovered that the shield’s molecules were changed due to a single misaligned molecule. Because of the misaligned molecule, every hit the shield took, the energy propagated to other molecules. This wave of energy spread throughout the shield and destroyed all the Vibranium.
It got so bad that the wave actually found its way to the Great Vibranium Mound in Wakanda. If the mound were to shatter like the shield, the released energy would destroy the world. Captain America then went to Wakanda with the hopes of using the remaining pieces of the shield to absorb the wave.
The Klaw, though, reached the mountain first and absorbed the the wave into himself. With new powers, the Klaw attacked Captain America, who had the shield taped together. Going on instinct, Captain America raised his broken shield and accidentally absorbed the Klaw’s attack. However, the powerful sonic wave from the Klaw restored the shield’s Vibranium structure.
Thanos shattered the shield with the Infinity Gauntlet, but Nebula restored it when she obtained the Gauntlet and reversed Thanos’s various wrongs.
The shield was destroyed by Molecule Man, who also destroyed Mjolnir, Iron Man’s armor, and the Silver Surfer’s board.
