Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released this Friday, May 1, 2015. However, some fans — yours truly — will be seeing it tonight. We hope that this primer series has helped you gain a little insight on the fascinating characters you’ll be seeing on the silver screen. But we’re not done yet because we still have one more bit of information to give you. For the final installment of our primer series, we bring you a quick rundown of the titular supervillain — Ultron. We saved the best for last because Ultron was one of the Avengers’ most formidable foes, proving to be extremely dangerous and resourceful.
Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, Ultron made his first appearance in a cameo in Avengers #54 (July 1968) as the Crimson Cowl, the villain who frees Ulysses Klaw from prison. At the end of the issue, the visage of Ultron is revealed, but a name is never given. Ultron’s main objective was to create the second incarnation of the Masters of Evil. He also hypnotizes Edwin Jarvis, Tony Stark’s butler, into working for him.
Ultron would later make his official appearance in Avengers #55 (August 1968) when the character is given the official name of Ultron-5, the living automaton.
