You can see in the image above all of the characters we’ve been told about so far. From left to right: Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Ciara Renee as Hawkgirl, Victor Garber as Professor Martin Stein, Caity Lotz (we’ll circle back to her in a second), Brandon Routh as The Atom, Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold and Dominic Purcell as Heat Wave. Here’s the network’s official synopsis of the new series, which will debut sometime early next year:

"When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat — one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known? DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW stars Victor Garber (“The Flash,” “Alias”); Brandon Routh (“Arrow,” “Superman Returns”); Arthur Darvill (“Doctor Who”); Caity Lotz (“Arrow”); Ciarra Renee (“Pippin”); Franz Drameh (“Edge of Tomorrow”); with Dominic Purcell (“The Flash,” “Prison Break”); and Wentworth Miller (“The Flash,” “Prison Break”). Based on the characters from DC Comics, DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” upcoming “Pan”), Marc Guggenheim (“Arrow,” “Eli Stone,” “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”), Andrew Kreisberg (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Eli Stone,” “Warehouse 13”) and Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” upcoming “Pan”)."

That brings us back to Lotz, who comes to the series from Arrow, where she played original Canary Sara Lance. Sara is also quite dead, with her killing at the hands of a brainwashed Thea Queen used as a major plot point for the first half of the show’s third season. The CW says Lotz will be White Canary on Legends of Tomorrow, hence her outfit in the picture above.

How are they going to pull this off? My guess is that Hunter is the key, and that they will simply pluck Sara from a point in time before she was killed. She’ll no doubt learn of her fate and choose to become White Canary either as a symbol of rebirth or as a sign that she’s helping to atone for some of the things in her past — she was a member of the League of Assassins, after all.

Everything that’s been shown of Legends of Tomorrow is encouraging, but I do wonder if having Captain Cold and Heat Wave on the show just when the Rogues were really starting to come together on The Flash will be a bit of a bummer. I’m also anxious to see why Stein is present but not Ronnie Raymond. More information on this series will be forthcoming, I’m sure. Maybe by the time San Diego Comic-Con rolls around, we’ll learn more.
