Luke Mitchell, the man who plays Lincoln Campbell, will be elevated to series regular status for the series’ third season, meaning he’ll be appearing even more often than before. He joins the original six cast members plus the two added in Season 2 (Nick Blood as Lance Hunter and Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse) for a total of nine.
Lincoln served as a bit of a guide for Skye/Daisy, helping her learn the ropes of the Inhumans’ secret city. He proved his mettle by aiding SHIELD against Skye’s crazy mom and her supporters when the chips were down, validating Skye’s belief that he’d do the right thing.
As far as how Lincoln might fit into the overall Agents of SHIELD fabric, it’s worth remembering that Phil Coulson gave Skye the new task of assembling (pun definitely intended) a new team of operatives with super powers toward the end of the Season 2 finale. Smart money says Lincoln will be a member of that team, since he’s the one powered person that Skye already trusts — or perhaps one of two if you count Deathlok.
I assumed that Henry Simmons’ Al “Mack” MacKenzie was a regular last season, but he was not, making the upcoming crew of nine the largest principal cast to date. The Agents of SHIELD writers have proven fairly adept at juggling a large number of subplots, so there should be enough screen time to go around. Plus, with the threats the team is facing getting increasingly dangerous as the series progresses, Lincoln’s electrical gifts will no doubt come in handy.
