Marvel announced today that Jon Bernthal has been cast as Castle, better known to comic book fans as the Punisher. True to his roots as one of the few Marvel heroes (and many people wouldn’t even use that word for Castle), the Netflix version of the Punisher is described as “a vigilante who aims to clean up New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results.” That should put him almost immediately at odds with Matt Murdock, who struggled with the question of whether or not to kill the criminals he encountered in Season 1 before ultimately deciding against it.
Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television, certainly made it sound like Daredevil and the Punisher wouldn’t be hanging out drinking beers together after a night out patrolling the streets.
"Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same."
Bernthal already has some genre cred from his time playing Shane Walsh on The Walking Dead. He grabbed the attention of critics for his performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, where he played Brad Bodnick, and the 38-year old actor has been in a number of TV series and movies over the last 13 years.
The debate now is whether or not Marvel is bringing in Castle to see if he can support a series of his own. Season 2 of Daredevil is expected to hit Netflix during the first four months of 2016.
