Daredevil Season 2 Described As “Daredevil vs Punisher”

Considering how much moral anguish Matt Murdock went through in Season 1 of Daredevil, he’s probably not going to take kindly to a guy who dresses up with a skull on his chest and runs around shooting bad guys in Hell’s Kitchen. That much we know. But could the Punisher be so diametrically opposed to Daredevil that he ends up as the major villain on Season 2 of the hit Netflix show?

Maybe, but probably not, according to the folks at Nerdist. Even though they broke an exclusive that co-showrunner Marco Ramirez likes to call Season 2 “Daredevil vs. Punisher,” Dan Casey still thinks it’s more likely a traditional villain will fill the role of the Big Bad. There’s no shortage of candidates, what with fans expecting to see Bullseye, the Hand likely to have unfinished business with Daredevil and a void in the underworld left by the arrest of Wilson Fisk that isn’t going to fill itself.

Instead, Casey says Ramirez’s tag line is going to describe the war for the hearts and minds of Hell’s Kitchen, possibly with Murdock seeing Frank Castle as the path he could have taken.

"However, the title of “Daredevil vs. the Punisher” is more of a philosophical battle that’ll take place over the season. With Kingpin out of the picture, a power vacuum will be created that the city’s villainous vermin will try and fill. With all these termites crawling out of the woodwork, the Punisher will likely emerge and try to exterminate them. However, as the self-appointed protector of Hell’s Kitchen, Daredevil is going to have to put a stop to that."

That means Daredevil and the Punisher will likely come to blows, as they have on more than one occasion in the comics. They also function at times as reluctant allies — see “The Omega Effect” crossover for one good relatively recent example — and you’d expect that might happen too, if the greater good dictates it.
