King Of Bad Searches: Aquaman Ironically Named Most Toxic Super Hero

The super hero who watches over the Earth’s seas getting named the “Most Toxic Superhero” has to be the ultimate irony. For Aquaman, it’s also a reality, as he was awarded the dubious honor for the second time in the three years that Intel Security has compiled its “Most Toxic Superheroes” list.

Now for a little explanation. When we say “Most Toxic,” we’re talking about the likelihood that typing a super hero’s name into one of the major search engines (Google, Bing or Yahoo) and following a link that ends up taking you to a “potentially harmful website,” like one that attempts to steal your personal information or install malware. Intel Security explains that using popular characters like DC and Marvel heroes can entice people to follow links that might otherwise raise a red flag.

For 2015, Aquaman is estimated to have an eye-popping 20 percent risk, meaning one out of five sites that pops up in an Aquaman search could be dangerous in some way. Iron Fist is the most toxic Marvel character, and it’s interesting that they lead more obvious choices like Batman or Spider-Man (who didn’t even crack this year’s list).

The complete top 10 looks like this, with each hero carrying at least an 18.33% risk:

  1. Aquaman
  2. Iron Fist
  3. Wolverine
  4. Wonder Woman
  5. Doctor Strange
  6. Daredevil
  7. (tie) Hulk / Iron Man
  8. Catwoman
  9. Green Lantern
  10. Batman

The advice here is obvious: be aware when you are online, and don’t visit sites that seem untrustworthy. Intel Security says misspellings in the URL are often the first signs that something is amiss. And please, please don’t enter personal information or passwords anywhere you don’t absolutely need to do so.

Especially if Aquaman asks for them, apparently.
