2. Uncle Sam

Please don’t sleep on a true American hero invented by the great Will Eisner! This isn’t the public domain guy you’ve seen on posters, but the actual in-continuity DC comics character (after the company acquired his rights from the defunct Quality Comics) who appears whenever the country is in its hour of greatest need. He’s the spirit of the nation, given physical form, and his power levels are as great as the people’s belief in the concept and promise of America.

Sam hasn’t been confined to just the main version of America either. When he discovered a parallel Earth (dubbed Earth X) where the United States needed his help even more than his own, he led the Freedom Fighters over there to help swing the balance in a three-decade-long World War II. He’s faced down an enraged Sinestro and lived to tell the tale, as even if you “kill” Sam, he’s going to come back eventually.

As long as we believe in Uncle Sam, he’s potentially the most powerful American patriotic super hero around. It’s also hard to argue with that classic design. As long as there’s a U.S.A., Uncle Sam is going to be around to help protect it. I don’t know about you, but I’ll sleep better at night knowing that.
