Dawn Of Justice: Zack Snyder Addresses Man Of Steel Carnage

It seems that the biggest complaint coming out of Man of Steel (2013) was the over-the-top destruction of a good part of Metropolis.  Critics and audiences felt that it was completely out of character for Superman to show almost no regard for human life in his battle with General Zod.  However, director Zack Snyder, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, is actually addressing those issues, and says that the main conflict driving Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice deals with the finale of Man of Steel.

"I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me, that you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences."

Ben Affleck, who will be playing Bruce Wayne / Batman in the upcoming blockbuster, echoed Snyder’s sentiments.

"One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings … And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event."

Snyder also says that the victims in Man of Steel will also not be forgotten, unlike other superhero films.

"There are other superhero movies where they joke about how basically no one’s getting hurt … That’s not us. What is that message? That’s it’s okay that there’s this massive destruction with zero consequence for anyone? That’s what Watchmen was about in a lot of ways too. There was a scene, that scene where Dan and Laurie get mugged. They beat up the criminals. I was like the first guy, I want to show his arm get broken. I want a compound fracture. I don’t want it to be clean. I want you to go, “Oh my God, I guess you’re right. If you just beat up a guy in an alley he’s not going to just be lying on the ground. It’s going to be messy.”"

Snyder is certainly making the DC universe much heavier in tone, allowing it to address philosophical and political issues.  It’ll be interesting to see how this whole theme will mold the DC Cinematic Universe going forward with the various films, especially the two-parter Justice League.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has a United States release date of March 25, 2016.  It will be directed by Zack Snyder, written by Chris Terrio from a story by David Goyer and Zack Snyder, and will star Henry Cavill as Clark Kent / Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves, Holly Hunter as a United States Senator, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone / Cyborg, and Callan Mulvey, Scoot McNairy, and Jena Malone in unspecified roles.
