Why Would Batman Fight Superman Anyway?

We remember that the reason Batman and Superman butted heads in The Dark Knight Returns is because the President wanted to get him under control and Superman had become his lapdog. Man of Steel established that Clark doesn’t answer the the government, so what would Bruce Wayne’s motivation for a one on one battle be? Well, it seems to have a lot to do with the reckless abandon with which Superman fought General Zod in the previous film. A lot of criticism came out of that film because of all the collateral damage done during the fight, seemingly without saving anybody.

In EW, Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck both recently addressed the impetus for the big throwdown between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel, with Snyder defending the conclusion of the last film.

"I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me, that you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences.Affleck: One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings. And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event."

Man of Steel might finally make a little more sense if this film is about fallout from those events. Just as in The Dark Knight, they seem to want to ask the questions ‘if these people are real and do these things, what happens next?’ That alone may make it all worth while.
