Batman v Superman Gets That Much More Real

(by Steve Lam, Bam Smack Pow staff writer)

My favorite thing to come out of Comic-Con 2015? Easily Fangirl Foods: Food Network’s Chef Duff Goldman program … just kidding! Do regular readers of Bam Smack Pow really need to even question what got me the most excited and thrilled?

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Hall H presentation and panel!

I’m viewing the full-length trailer as I’m writing this post, and I’ve re-watched it over 100 times already! Dark, gritty, thrilling, and beyond all my expectations, the trailer had two of DC’s most iconic figures – Batman and Superman (my favorite super hero of all time with Batman being a very close second) — battling it out, and a brief, high-action look at Wonder Woman.

But the powers-that-be at Warner Bros. didn’t just give us a few scenes and footage stitched together. The trailer had context: the world becoming xenophobic against the Man of Steel and the grizzled Dark Knight launching an all-out attack due to his built up anguish of losing those he cared about to an increasingly dangerous world.

Detractors are still going to hate on any new footage coming from this pre-Justice League film and say that it lacks fun and is all too self-important. I call it great, compelling writing.  The greatest science fiction are allegories to our own reality, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is no different. How does a cynical world handle the arrival of essentially a god? That’s what the thesis of this film tries to answer. We’re in the midst of witnessing greatness here. March 25, 2016 can’t come soon enough!
