Gotham: Oswald & Jim Are No Longer Friends

In Gotham, the relationship between Jim Gordon and Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin has always been one filled with friction, but at least Oswald always considered Jim a friend even if the feeling wasn’t mutual. That’s all changed in season 2.

Robin Lord Taylor describes how the relationship between Jim & Oswald has changed:

"I think in the first season he really did want to be friends with Gordon. He said that Gordon was one of the two people he trusted in Gotham City, the other being his mother, of course. I think he was deeply hurt by the betrayal Gordon showed him in the finale. He was going to leave him there to die in a hospital handcuffed to a radiator."

But Taylor says Cobblepot still needs Gordon:

"He understands that he needs an ally on that side, so it’s more tense now."

And what about Penguin’s position as the “King of Gotham”?

"It’s one thing to crawl your way to the top. To maintain your place there is another story. I think that’s the reason he doesn’t abuse it. He does understand that you have to have people’s respect and trust to stay in a place like that, even in the underbelly of Gotham City."

We’ll see if Penguin can keep his position as King of Gotham and just how contentious the relationship between him and Gordon will get when season two of Gotham starts September 21st on Fox!
