‘Suicide Squad’ Shows the Aftermath of Practical Effects
By Skip Harvey
A lot of filmmakers in Hollywood have embraced the amazing things that can be done with modern computer generated special effects. They can show and do things that were virtually impossible years ago. Some seem to use it too much, it seems. Often times leaning on CGI creates a film that can make the audiences detach from the setting or characters. There’s just something that doesn’t feel right about an actor interacting with something that isn’t really there. Ask George Lucas.
That’s one reason directors like Guillermo Del Toro and Suicide Squad‘s David Ayer choose to selectively mix CGI and practical effects. Ayer tweeted out a photo from the Squad set showing the aftermath of doing an action film with real sets and props.
The cleanup is probably the worst part of the whole affair, but at least it will look and feel more real to fans.
