Bam Smack Pow Cosplay Spotlight: Angela Bermudez
Meet Cosplayer Angela Bermudez!
It is time for another cosplay spotlight! This time around, we talk with Angela Bermudez. She has been cosplaying for close to a decade, and has over 60 different cosplay costume designs under her belt. Recently, Angela has learned “not all that glitters is gold” in the world of cosplay. She shares with us her love of cosplay and a great life lesson.
Bam Smack Pow: Where are you from?
Angela Bermudez:I’m from a little place called Cartago, Costa Rica.
BSP: How long have you been a cosplayer?
Angela: Nine years if I’m not mistaken…
BSP: Who or what inspired you to cosplay?
Angela: At my first con, I fell in love with the cosplayers and the catwalk! I love to sew my own clothes. In that moment, I realized I could create different costumes with my sewing machine. Unique things that you can’t find on the streets 🙂
BSP: What do you do when you aren’t cosplaying?
Angela: Working like there’s no tomorrow!
BSP: You were recently in a situation where you were in another country for a convention, and things did not work out the way you had hoped. Can you explain what happened?
Angela: Well there was a “convention” I was invited to. The organizer paid for a one-way flight to El Salvador. However, once I arrived, he was arrested for fraud, along with other things. He lied to us. He told us (and sending the fake tickets by mail) that he paid our hotel and return flights back to Costa Rica. We were there without knowing the truth. There were no hotel, no convention, no nothing. We were stranded.
BSP: How did you get back to Costa Rica from El Salvador?
Angela: After knowing that, local cosplayers collected money which helped us get back to Costa Rica three days later.
One thing I want to mention is that we met a lot of kind people there. They invited us to their places while they collected the money for the flight. I’m always making my husband go with me to these conventions, and he helped me stay calm. People who know me understand that I’m too careful. However, this made me think that you can’t trust anybody anymore.
BSP: This is obviously a scam. Is this something that is happening a lot to other cosplayers?
Angela: I’m not sure. It’s the first time that happened to a Costa Rican.
BSP: How can other cosplayers keep themselves safe from these types of scams?
Angela: Call the airport, make sure everything is true!
BSP: Do you think this experience has discouraged you from traveling?
Angela: Nah, it’s just a stumble.
BSP: What is the best advice you would give someone new to cosplaying?
Angela: Don’t let people tell you what to do! Don’t feed the trolls. If that makes you happy, what are you waiting for?
BSP: What convention can your fans expect to see you next?
Angela: I was invited as a guest to Kamen 2015 (San José, CR) this weekend!
