Gotham: Ben McKenzie Talks Changes To Season 2

I think even Gotham’s biggest fans would admit that season one was an uneven season to say the least. Well you’re not alone. Ben McKenzie, who plays Detective James Gordon on Gotham, thinks season one had plenty of issues as well, and talks about what season two will do differently to improve.

"I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever. That was just a mistake. We should’ve never done it."

McKenzie thinks frequent hiatus’ as well as a sudden order for additional episodes didn’t help matters:

We were ordered for 16 [episodes]. We were going to have one break and come back and finish the rest of them in terms of the airing, and then we added six more, so we had to break again and then we had to come back again. And it’s hard for the audience to follow that many changes in a series in terms of when it’s airing and when it’s not.

But McKenzie feels really positive about the direction Season two of Gotham is going:

"The audience really wants to understand who these people are and live with them, sit with them and enjoy them. Whether they’re evil or good, they are entertaining. So that’s what we’re doing in season 2. [It’s] really kick ass. I think it’s exactly what the fans want to see."

McKenzie is obviously careful to not blame you know, bad acting or bad writing. I like Gotham, but I certainly think it’s merely a decent show in an age of mostly spectacular comic book-based shows. But hey, most first seasons of hit shows are a relatively bumpy road, so I have high hopes Gotham can really come into its own in season two, which premiers September 21st on Fox.
