4. Elektra

Rotten Tomatoes score: 10%

Domestic box office: $24.4 million

Despite its reputation, you’ll notice that the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie didn’t make our list. I’d categorize that film as aggressively mediocre, but essentially harmless. It wasn’t until the powers that be decided to spin off Elektra into her own movie that things really got bad.

The thing is that it easily could have worked. Jennifer Garner was a bankable star, one who had already proven herself in action-heavy roles on Alias. Elektra Natchios had an interesting back story that would have made for great drama, and her work as an assassin could have been turned into some kick-ass (if probably R-rated) fight scenes.

You won’t find any of that in this movie. Well, except for Garner, of course. The writers somehow managed to take the framework of Elektra’s background and turn it into an incomprehensible mess, neutering the character traits that make her compelling. The interesting villain Typhoid is ruined, and I don’t even remember why. It’s possible I never understood in the first place.

On pure merit, this probably belongs more along the lines of Blade: Trinity in the sense that it was more boring than brutally bad. But check out that box office total: $24.4 million for a movie released in 2005? Yikes. it’s unfair that this is the case, but when studios balk at making female-led super hero movies, this is probably the one that most gives them cold sweats.
